Limpopo police investigating prisoner’s death in holding cells

A man who was due to appear in court in connection with a rape was found dead in police holding cells earlier this week.

An awaiting-trial prisoner was found dead in the holding cells at Seshego Police Station in Limpopo on Monday.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the deceased was discovered unconscious during a routine check-up and was certified dead by emergency medical services,” says police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.

The deceased (38) was awaiting trial for an alleged rape committed in January and had made several court appearances. His next court appearance was scheduled for September 3.

“The circumstances surrounding his death are currently unknown and are being investigated. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death,” Ledwaba says.

The Seshego police have opened an inquest docket.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is also investigating the matter.
