Limpopo floods: 5-year-old missing after evacuation attempt

Emergency teams are searching flood-hit areas outside Giyani for a five-year-old boy swept away while evacuating with his mother.

A major search operation is underway in Mbaula village, outside Giyani in Limpopo, as emergency services race against time to locate a missing five-year-old boy.

According to Letaba Herald, Siyanda Baloyi has been missing since early yesterday morning.

Swept away by floodwaters

Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba says preliminary reports indicate the child and his mother were swept away by floodwaters while attempting to evacuate their water-filled home at around 06:00.

The mother was later rescued by SANDF members after being caught in a tree. However, the child remains unaccounted for.

Multi-disciplinary search effort

The intensified search involves a multi-disciplinary team from the SAPS Search and Rescue unit, SANDF and Emergency Medical Services.

Teams are navigating dangerous and fast-moving waters in the area.

Appeal for information

Authorities are appealing to anyone with information that could assist in safely locating Siyanda to come forward. Information can be provided to detective Lieutenant Colonel JJ Mbalati at 082 565 6491 or via Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Call for public co-operation

Speaking on the ongoing crisis, acting provincial police commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers emphasised the importance of public co-operation and safety.

“Our multi-disciplinary teams will continue to navigate dangerous waters to reach and assist residents in distress. It is important that we prioritise safety, especially during these rainy conditions.”
