KZN’s top cop renews 5-year contract

Police Commissioner Mkhwanazi's contract renewal was finalised this past week, providing vital stability as KZN battles persistent crime and organised syndicates.

KZN Premier Thami Ntuli confirmed today that the contract of Provincial Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has been formally renewed, averting what had been a looming leadership vacuum in the province’s police service, reports The Witness.

Speaking to The Witness during a high‑profile crime prevention imbizo at Caluza Sports Ground in Pietermaritzburg, Ntuli says the renewal had been finalised in the past week after persistent engagement with national police leadership.

“On the issue of the contract renewal of Mkhwanazi, it has been renewed,” the premier says, describing the outcome as critical for continued stability in the KZN police.

Mkhwanazi’s previous contract was due to expire on Tuesday, prompting concern from provincial leaders that a delay could unsettle ongoing crime‑fighting efforts.

Ntuli stresses that securing Mkhwanazi’s continuation was essential as KZN battles persistent violent crime and organised syndicates. “Stable leadership in policing allows us to maintain momentum in ensuring safer communities,” he tells The Witness.

The renewal comes after weeks of public calls by the premier for the contract to be expedited by National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.

Ntuli had previously urged that finalisation be fast‑tracked to avoid any disruption as the end of the month approached.

Residents at the imbizo expressed relief at the news, with many citing the need for continuity in policing strategy ahead of the winter policing season.

As provincial commanders prepare to brief community leaders in the coming days, Ntuli reiterates that the government would continue working closely with SAPS structures to enhance safety and accountability throughout KZN.
