KZN woman finds naked man asleep on her stoep

A woman who thinks a man was attacked and left for dead called her neighbours for help.

An Ashburton, KZN, woman was shocked to find a naked stranger asleep at her front door early Sunday morning.

The man was discovered by Shashika Jaggernath as she prepared to leave home for a spiritual meeting at around 05:00.

Speaking to The Witness on Sunday, Jaggernath said she woke up at around 03:00 to open the door for her cat to go out.

She said while getting ready to go for a spiritual meeting, she remembered that her cat was still outside and went to open the door for it when she discovered a naked man sound asleep on her stoep.

“At one point I thought somebody attacked him and he was dead on my doorstep. I breathed a sigh of relief after hearing him snort.

“I locked the door and quickly told my 17-year-old daughter that we had a stranger at our door. I sent a message to our security group and asked for their assistance. I also called two of our neighbours.

“I waited for the neighbours to get here. I didn’t want to wake him up as I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t want to take a risk,” she said.

Jaggernath said that when the neighbours arrived to wake up the man, it was clear he had been beaten up.

“When everyone got here, we realised that he was totally out of it and in shock. He didn’t know where he was and kept asking us where he was.

“We questioned him so that we could get contact details for his next of kin and that is when he gave us his dad’s number.

“We got hold of him, but since his dad was in Bulwer we contacted another family member, who arrived to fetch the young man,” said Jaggernath.

While waiting for his family to pick him up, Jaggernath said they got the man some clothes to wear and coffee to drink.

“This was a very unfortunate circumstance for him because it might have been frightening for him.

“Thank God that he ended up in a community that is loving and caring. I am glad that he was one of the good ones that ended up at my door and not a shady character.”

She said it was imperative to stay connected with family members or friends when going out for the night.

“We are living in a different world. This incident has left me concerned. You often hear of strange things happening to children and we need to have each other’s back.

“This man said all that he can remember is people hitting him. One wonders if the suspects thought he was dead and drove to Ashburton to get rid of him.”

After his family fetched him, they took him to Alexandra Police Station to open a case.

Attempts to get police comment from the police were unsuccessful at the time of publishing.
