KZN rehab centre under fire over ‘abduction’ and unlawful admission claims

A Citizen investigation reveals how Tetelestai Recovery Centre operated without a licence for years amid a murder charge and claims of faked court orders.

While many patients and their families believed they were admitted with valid court orders, a controversial rehabilitation centre in the KZN South Coast has been operating without a licence for years, an investigation by The Citizen reveals.

Tetelestai Recovery Centre came under the spotlight when Luke Edwards died at the facility last year, allegedly after being beaten for trying to escape. Four people have been charged with his murder.

The Citizen’s investigation reveals how the organisation was only temporary registered from March to October last year. It also exposes a flawed admission process, with a state prosecutor named in several patient accounts and no record of court orders to date.
