KZN licence plate change: Motorists urged to act before deadline
KZN motorists risk fines from December if they fail to switch to the province’s new licence numbering system before the November 30 deadline.
Driving with old licence plates will become an offence after the migration deadline of November 30, and KZN motorists will be fined as the licence number will be deemed invalid.
Berea Mail reports that motorists are urged to visit their nearest licensing offices to change their old number plates, while those renewing their car licences will have theirs changed automatically.
New numbering system introduced
The KZN Department of Transport introduced the new licence numbering system for the province as it was running out of new numbers, and to align KZN with the national numbering system.
“Failure to migrate timeously will lead to members of the public getting fined as this will become a violation of the National Road Traffic Act,” the department said.
Notify relevant service providers
Motorists are also advised to inform their car insurer of the change in licence number in the case of needing to make a claim, their bank if the vehicle is still being paid off, or if they have a petrol card, and their tracking company, if applicable.
