eMbalenhle man murdered: 2 more cops arrested by IPID

Two eMbalenhle police officers will join three of their colleagues in court after the murder of a Mpumalanga man last year.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) arrested another two eMbalenhle police officers yesterday in connection with the murder of Mkhapheni Mbatha in Mandela Section last year.

Ridge Times reports that Mbatha was allegedly accused of selling drugs. Witnesses claim they saw officers assault him before loading him into a vehicle on October 2 in the Mandela section of eMbalenhle, Marikana.

A community member followed the vehicle to a clinic. It is alleged Mbatha was declared dead on his arrival at the Extension 4 clinic.

His death sparked public outcry and an investigation by IPID.

Three police officers including a police reservist were previously arrested and released on bail.

The two officers arrested yesterday will join the others in the court dock soon to face nine charges, including murder, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and defeating the ends of justice.
