Hyacinth coverage in Hartbeespoort Dam less than 3%

Future solutions to manage hyacinth coverage include manual removal, biocontrol and nanobubble technology.

Hyacinth coverage on Hartbeespoort Dam has been less than 3% since April. Magalies Water says they aim to keep it that way with the help of a network of stakeholders bringing workable solutions to better the dam.

The appointment of Hayamatla which uses mechanical harvesting as an intervention method to remove floating substances from the water, including hyacinth and debris at the dam wall, has proven successful.

Hyamatla has been removing hyacinth and debris at the Hartbeespoort Dam wall for the past weeks.

During a stakeholder meeting recently, Magalies Water said the Hartbeespoort Dam Rehabilitation Project was headed in the right direction as more stakeholders get on board.

The meeting, held on board the Alba boat, included stakeholders such as Blue Planet, the American Chemical Society, Hyamatla, Baylor University in America, and the Pecanwood Homeowners Association

Several solutions were presented concerning the rehabilitation and long-term sustainability of the dam as a tourist attraction.

Some of the proposed integrated resource management solutions include the manual removal of hyacinth, biocontrol, nanobubble technology, Citizen Science and international scientific scholarly advisory.

Kele Mogamisi, general manager at Magalies Water’s communication and stakeholders department said they are excited to see the stakeholder network growing and realise that they need each other for the project to succeed.
