Heavily armed gang robs Durban jewellery store

Around 15 gunmen got away with an undisclosed amount of money and jewellery after robbing a store.

A police officer and a bystander were shot during an armed robbery at a jewellery shop at the Phoenix Plaza in Durban yesterday morning.

It is reported that a gang of about 15 men armed with handguns and rifles, who had three getaway cars, stormed the jewellery store and got away with an undisclosed amount of money and jewellery.

KZN VIP Protection Services spokesperson Cohen Papa says several gunshots were fired during the robbery.

“Staff members at the shop are very traumatised but they are attended to. Various security personnel and the police were under fire. A bystander and a police officer were hit, stabilised, and taken to the hospital.

“The search for the gang is underway… It is not clear whether any of them have been arrested or sustained any gunshot wounds,” says Papa.
