Granny stabbed to death in Middelburg, burial to take place on National Women’s Day

In a powerful stand against gender-based violence, a woman’s family has chosen to lay her to rest on National Women’s Day after she was murdered, allegedly by her partner.

Johanna Mlangeni, the grandmother who was stabbed to death, allegedly by her partner in Cowen Ntuli Street in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, on Thursday morning, will be laid to rest in Mapimpane, Doornkop, on August 9, which is annually celebrated as National Women’s Day.

Government declared August as Women’s Month and August 9 as National Women’s Day to shine a light on women’s rights and equality, while advocating against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

Middelburg Observer reports that, in a poignant nod to the GBVF pandemic, Mlangeni’s son Charles said they chose National Women’s Day to bury his mother, who is now also a GBVF statistic.

Mlangeni was stabbed in the upper body while making her way to work as a domestic helper in Gholfsig.

Charles says his mom and her partner, who allegedly stabbed her, normally travelled to Middelburg together for work.

Mlangeni had worked for her Gholfsig employer for the past 23 years.

Her body was found lifeless in the street around 06:00 on Thursday morning.

Charles says both he and his sister, as well as a four-year-old grandson, lived with Mlangeni in Doornkop.

She lost a second son in 2020. Mlangeni also leaves behind three sisters and four brothers.

The partner has been arrested, and the knife allegedly used in the murder has been recovered.
