George police make arrests and probe double murder after week of crime

Various violent and criminal incidents over the past week kept law enforcement busy across George in the Western Cape, resulting in a series of arrests, investigations and fatal crashes, reports George Herald.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on charges of reckless and negligent driving, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol, after a crash just before midnight last week Friday (July 24) in York Street. The man was later released and will appear in court at a later date.

In an unrelated incident, Conville police opened a culpable homicide docket after the death of a 44-year-old man who was hit by a vehicle on the N2 highway near Lawaaikamp on Sunday (July 26). The victim sustained serious injuries and was declared dead on arrival at hospital. The cause of the crash is yet to be established.

Double murder in Thembalethu

A manhunt continues for two suspects involved in the killing of two men in Thembalethu last week. The incident occurred in Tawule Street, Zone 9, at about 18:00 last week Wednesday (July 22).

According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies, officers responded to reports of a shooting and found the body of a 43-year-old man in the street. The second victim, aged 31, collapsed in a yard in Yawani Street. Both men sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

“Crime scene experts collected evidence, including several spent cartridges, as part of the investigation,” said Spies. “The motive for the killings has not yet been established.” According to unconfirmed information, the victims were two men collecting protection money. It is believed that the alleged extortionists frequently visit businesses demanding a fee. The suspects remain at large.

Man arrested after burglary and stolen firearm found

A 37-year-old man was expected to appear in the George Magistrate’s Court on Monday, July 27, after his arrest in connection with a house burglary near Herold, during which a firearm was stolen.

According to Spies, George police officers, members of the Outeniqua K9 Unit and the Noll’s Halt Farm Watch responded to reports of a burglary in De Vlugt on Friday, July 24. The investigation led officers to a nearby bushy area, where they discovered a safe, the stolen firearm and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect was positively linked to the burglary and arrested. He faces charges of house burglary and theft, as well as unlawful possession of a firearm. At the time of publication, police could not confirm whether the suspect had appeared in court or provide further details regarding the proceedings.

Teenager killed in Parkdene collision

Conville police opened a culpable homicide case after the death of an 18-year-old pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle in Parkdene on Sunday, July 26.

According to Spies, officers responded to the scene in Golf Street, where the young woman had been hit by a vehicle. She sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

A 44-year-old man was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. He was later released and is expected to appear in court once formally charged.
