George motorcyclist’s death: Police warn about sharing video

A horrific video of the scene where a man lost his life on the Outeniqua Pass is being circulated on social media platforms.

Police management in the Western Cape has launched an investigation following the circulation of a horrific WhatsApp video taken at the scene of the incident where a motorcyclist (41) from George lost his life on the Outeniqua Pass on Friday.

In the meantime a friend of the deceased’s family contacted George Herald also pleading with the paper to ask readers to stop sharing the horrible video.

According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies, the internal investigation aims to determine whether the video was taken by police officers who responded to the scene.

A senior officer attached to the Garden Route District was assigned to the matter.

Upon conclusion of the investigation, if any police members are implicated, consequence management will follow.

While the investigation is underway, the police appeal to the public to refrain from circulating this video on social media platforms due to the sensitive nature of its content and also out of respect for the bereaved family.

Western Cape police management consider this matter as serious and condemns the circulation of the video. The necessary steps will be taken if found that police officials are involved.
