George building collapse update: Body and injured retrieved from rubble

Multi-disciplinary search-and-rescue teams are being co-ordinated by an emergency management services specialist from a joint operations centre, and rescue efforts will continue throughout the night.

A body has been retrieved from the rubble of the collapsed building on a construction site in Victoria Street, George.

A Southern Cape police spokesperson said that 22 victims with multiple injuries have been transported to nearby medical facilities.

The search-and-rescue operation is ongoing and multi-disciplinary teams have arrived to assist. The teams will be co-ordinated by an emergency management services (EMS) specialist from a joint operations centre.

Wouter Kriel, the spokesperson for Anton Bredell, the minister of local government, says support co-ordinated by Provincial Disaster Management is on its way to George.

This includes three heavy crane trucks, heavy lifting and technical equipment, a structural collapse vehicle and 53 EMS staff members.

Rescue efforts will continue through the night.
