Gauteng police commissioner’s driver survives hijack attempt in Westonaria

The driver of Gauteng’s acting police commissioner escaped injury during an attempted hijacking, with police now hunting the suspects.

Police are investigating a case of attempted hijacking and malicious damage to property following an attack on a police constable this morning.

According to Randfontein Herald, local police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said ‘a constable was driving a state vehicle around Westonaria when a blue BMW stopped next to him and smashed the driver’s window with an unknown object’.

“The constable fired at the perpetrators, and they sped off. They left a firearm behind, which was later found to be a toy gun. No injuries were reported, and the police are on the lookout for the perpetrators. Anyone with information that can assist with the investigation is requested to contact the Crime Stop Hotline on 08600 10111,” Nevhuhulwi said.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed to Caxton Local Media that the constable is the driver of acting Gauteng police commissioner Major General Fred Kekana.
