Former KZN surgeon granted bail in sexual assault case
A man accused of sexually assaulting four patients was granted bail with strict conditions, including reporting to police twice weekly.
A doctor from Madadeni near Newcastle in KZN accused of sexually assaulting four female patients between September 2025 and April 2026 was granted R15 000 bail in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court this morning.
Newcastle Advertiser reports the 66-year-old man was arrested on April 28 after a ‘whistleblower’ allegedly informed police about the offences while the surgeon was employed at Madadeni Regional Hospital.
It is alleged that he inappropriately touched patients’ breasts and other private parts and, in some cases, forced them to perform sexual acts while under his care.
He first appeared in court last Thursday (April 30) for bail information purposes.
State does not oppose bail
During the official bail hearing this morning, state prosecutor Thulisile Shabalala confirmed that the state would not oppose bail.
She said the state believed the former surgeon was unlikely to tamper with witnesses, was not considered a flight risk, and that his release would not result in public unrest.
Shabalala and defence attorney Allen Kelly both read statements into the court record before delivering their closing arguments.
Following a brief adjournment, presiding officer Magistrate Nkosi delivered judgment and granted the accused bail of R15 000.
Strict bail conditions imposed
Nkosi said the accused must report to Newcastle Police Station every Monday and Friday between 06:00 and 18:00. He is also prohibited from contacting or interfering with state witnesses and may not go near Madadeni Regional Hospital.
In addition, the accused may not leave KZN or South Africa while the case is ongoing.
The matter was postponed to June 26.
He intends to plead not guilty.
Health department responds
KZN Department of Health spokesperson Ntokozo Maphisa said the department is aware of the matter.
“Without prejudice, we wish to state unequivocally that we condemn any form of abuse or violation of any individual, particularly within a healthcare setting where individuals may be vulnerable,” said Maphisa.
Maphisa added that the safety, dignity and well-being of patients remains their highest priority.
“The matter is now in the hands of law enforcement and we will fully co-operate with the investigation. The department is also initiating its own internal processes in line with applicable regulations.”
