Firefighter hijacked by 4 armed men in Middelburg

It is suspected that a family of four was tailed by hijackers after withdrawing money from a bank.

Senior firefighter Daki Mabena was hijacked at gunpoint by four masked men just outside his Middelburg, Mpumalanga, home last night.

Mabena, his wife Khabo Shoba, and their two children arrived at their home in Extension 23 at 20:00, where four men armed with pistols told them to get out of their Toyota Hilux bakkie, get on the ground and not look up.

Shoba told the Middelburg Observer that she was hit on the back of the head with a gun after briefly looking up to make sure her children were alright.

The four men demanded that Mabena hand them the cash he had, which was just under R10 000.

The family withdrew R10 000 at an ABSA Bank in town at 14:00 and may have been tailed by the assailants after the transaction took place.

The robbers then hijacked the bakkie with Mabena inside and drove away from his family.

He was held captive for several minutes and sustained minor injuries from allegedly being hit by the men.

Mabena was released on a random street corner in Mhluzi and the suspects fled in the stolen bakkie.

The bakkie has been recovered.
