Festive travel congestion causes major delays at Lebombo border
While traffic congestion at the Lebombo border post is expected to ease by Christmas Day, authorities urge patience, hydration and co-operation.
Motorists travelling to and from Mozambique have experienced significant delays at the Lebombo border post over the past few days, with traffic volumes expected to remain high until Christmas Day.
Lowvelder reports that, according to the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, about 25 000 people enter the country daily during this peak period.
The prolonged delays have raised safety concerns, particularly for travellers who spend long hours in queues without access to food, water or ablution facilities.
Safety concerns and warning
Department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi urges motorists to remain patient, stay hydrated and co-operate with traffic officials on duty.
“We are aware that traffic is heavily backed up. Officers are on site to help manage and regulate the flow,” Mmusi says.
He warns that motorists who drive into oncoming traffic in an attempt to bypass queues will be apprehended.
“We are also assisting vehicles that decide not to proceed through the border and helping them turn around safely,” he adds.
Mmusi says traffic volumes are expected to decrease by Christmas Day, which should improve traffic flow and reduce waiting times.
He reiterates the call for patience and co-operation from all road users.
