Female police detective gunned down inside KZN home

Spent 9mm cartridges were recovered at a crime scene where a law enforcement officer was found lying in a pool of blood.

A female police detective was shot and killed yesterday at a residence in Oakford, near Verulam in KZN.

Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson Prem Balram said they received a call from residents reporting that a police officer was under attack, reports The Witness.

Balram said reaction officers were immediately dispatched and arrived at the property just before 14:00.

“On arrival, officers found an elderly female seated outside the kitchen entrance of the home. A neighbour directed first responders into the residence.

“Inside the house, the detective was located lying in a prone position between the kitchen and the living room. She had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was found in a pool of blood. Several spent 9mm cartridges were recovered at the scene.”

Balram added that witnesses on the scene said the woman arrived at her mother’s residence in a white BMW 320D shortly before the incident.

“She left the vehicle door ajar while offloading food and entered the home. Two unidentified males allegedly followed her inside. Multiple shots were fired thereafter. The suspects then exited the house and fled in a white SUV.”

Balram said the woman’s elderly mother was inside the residence at the time of the shooting.

Officers contacted the Point police, but were unable to confirm if the female was stationed at the precinct.

“The elderly female was unable to provide further information to officers due to a recent medical condition,” he said.

Balram added that officers found court documents in the woman’s vehicle.

The motive for the shooting has not been established.
