Fatal Meyerton highway ambush: Man killed after approaching motorists for help
Police are looking for the occupants of a white Toyota following a bizarre and senseless double shooting on the R59.
Police are investigating a ´random´ late-night attack after a breakdown on the Johan le Roux off-ramp just outside Meyerton ended in the death of 23-year-old Xolani Dube. Gunmen reportedly opened fire on Dube before fleeing toward Vereeniging, only to return minutes later to fire a second round of shots that wounded a 16-year-old boy.
Constable Nompumelelo Zazini, a spokesperson for the Meyerton, says it is alleged that the driver of a silver VW Polo with four occupants stopped on the off-ramp after the vehicle had overheated.
Dube, who was one of the passengers, allegedly crossed the road to request water from the occupants of a white Toyota Corolla that had stopped on the opposite side of the road.
He was shot and died at the scene.
The vehicle reportedly drove off towards Vereeniging before returning to the off-ramp, where further shots were fired.
The Polo driver’s 16-year-old son sustained a gunshot wound to his arm and was transported to hospital for medical treatment. The driver and another passenger were unharmed.
Police recovered 13 spent 9mm cartridges at the scene.
Meyerton Station Commander Colonel Senzangakona Christopher Mohale has appealed to the public for any information that may assist the investigation.
No arrests have been made.
