Fatal Knysna weather incident: Tributes pour in for social worker
With the Western Cape facing severe weather, Lauren Fredericks died in a storm-related incident while on duty, assisting evacuated residents.
The 37-year-old woman who died yesterday morning when a tree fell onto her car has been identified as social auxiliary worker Lauren Fredericks.
Knysna-Plett Herald reports the incident happened at the corner of Main Road (N2) and Queen Street during storm conditions.
Fredericks, who joined the Department of Social Development’s Knysna office in August 2021, was on her way to assess residents who had been evacuated due to the adverse weather when the incident occurred shortly after she parked her vehicle.
Condolences from provincial government
Western Cape Minister of social development Jaco Londt expressed his condolences to her family, friends and colleagues following the tragedy.
“I am deeply saddened by this loss. Ms Fredericks had a love for community work and was part of the office’s disaster management response team. Our thoughts are with her family, particularly her young son, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” Londt said in a statement.
Londt acknowledged frontline workers, including Department of Social Development staff, who continue assisting vulnerable residents amid the ongoing storm conditions.
Police confirmed an inquest docket has been opened following the incident near the Knysna Police Station.
Church tribute
George Herald reports that the Anglican Church of the George Diocese has also paid tribute.
Bishop Edwin Desmond Pockpass conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Fredericks’ husband, young son and family, describing her life as a gift and assuring them of the church’s prayers and support.
“It is with heavy hearts that we received the news of Lauren’s tragic passing in Knysna. At such a time of sudden and devastating loss, words feel inadequate, yet we wish to surround you with love, prayer, and the assurance that you are not alone in your grief.
“Lauren’s life was a gift, and her memory will remain a blessing to all who knew her. In moments such as these, we turn to the promises of God, who is near to the brokenhearted and who binds up their wounds.
“May His presence bring you comfort in the silence, His peace steady you in the storm, and His love enfolds you when the weight of grief feels unbearable,” his statement read.
Storm damage across the region
Elsewhere in the region, heavy weather caused widespread disruption.
In Plettenberg Bay, water surged into the River Club Estate along Piesang Valley Road, flooding homes. According to residents, it receded later in the morning.
Plettenberg Bay authorities reported dramatic footage circulating on social media showing strong river outflow from the Piesang River opening the estuary near Central Beach, opposite the Beacon Isle Resort and Robberg Beach parking area.
Another video shows waves crashing into the Robberg Beach parking area beside Beacon Isle Resort, while water was also seen rushing beneath the pedestrian footbridge linking the resort area.
Authorities continue to monitor conditions as clean-up and assessments get underway across affected areas.
Stormy conditions are expected to continue into today.
