Family members hacked to death: Man to appear in Polokwane

The suspect (48) is said to have hacked his mother and sister-in-law to death with a sharp object after attacking another woman.

A 48-year-old man from Lebowakgomo will appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court tomorrow on two counts of murder and assault.

The man was arrested in connection with a gruesome domestic violence hacking incident in which he allegedly hacked his mother and sister-in-law to death and injured a neighbour.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the incident took place yesterday morning in Moshate Village, Ga-Chuene, in the Lebowakgomo policing precinct.

“The suspect is said to have attacked a woman (23) at her residence with a sharp object. She escaped and sought community assistance. The suspect then returned to his place of residence and killed his mother (78) and sister-in-law (60) with the same object,” Ledwaba’s statement reads.

He adds the suspect was apprehended with the community’s assistance and that the injured woman was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expresses profound sorrow over the incident, highlighting the devastating impact of gender-based violence in communities.

“We are deeply saddened by the senseless attacks and killings of women, especially by family members. We will ensure justice prevails for the victims,” Hadebe concludes.

Ledwaba says the motive behind the incident is still unknown.
