Extortion on the rise: SAPS issues public warning and safety advice

SAPS warns communities about rising extortion, explains how the crime operates, and urges victims and witnesses to report incidents immediately.

SAPS has issued a public notice warning citizens about the dangers of extortion and providing advice on how to protect themselves.

Bloemfontein Courant reports that, according to SAPS, the emerging crime trend infiltrating communities and businesses ‘is a criminal offence where an individual illegally obtains money, property, or services from another person by threatening harm or using coercive measures’.

How extortion operates

Community members are encouraged to stay informed about the tactics used by extortionists, as taking precautionary measures can help protect themselves and others from becoming victims.

What to do if targeted

“Never hesitate to seek help if you are being extorted. If you suspect acts of extortion, contact the hotlines immediately. Protect yourself and report incidents of extortion to the SAPS. Stop the scourge and report extortionists,” SAPS advised.
