eMalahleni officials’ corruption case postponed

Two mayoral committee members appeared in court again over an alleged R500 000 gratification scheme linked to a businessman’s lease extension.

Two prominent members of Emalahleni Local Municipality in Mpumalanga who were arrested for alleged corruption appeared in court again yesterday, reports Witbank News.

Jerry Patrick Dijane (53) and Martha Busi Hlumbane (54) appeared in the eMalahleni Magistrate’s Court, and the case was postponed to September 7.

Outside the court, Councillor Karien McDermid from the opposition party said they are keeping an eye on the legal proceedings.

“This money should have been used for service delivery. We will not tolerate corruption,” she stated.

The two members of the mayoral committee sent shock waves through the community when they were arrested after allegedly receiving gratification.

This was allegedly part of a R500 000 gratification demanded for a businessman to extend his lease agreement.

According to Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi the gratification payment on April 26, 2025, followed an alleged payment of R40 000 in February last year, reportedly equally shared between Dijane and Hlumbane.

Their two luxury vehicles were also seized during the operation.
