Elections 2024: Political analyst talks coalitions and the future of SA politics

The DA might consider a coalition with the ANC, but never with the EFF or MK, says a political science expert.

Political analyst Prof Piet Croucamp of the North West University says the Multi-Party Charter (MPC) will not feature in future coalition negotiations because most members of the alliance did not garner significant votes.

He said the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party’s future might rely on establishing a sustainable coalition relationship. If they fail to do so, there is a big possibility that they might be a one-term party.

Earlier, MK spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela told the media they would only work with the ANC if President Cyril Ramaphosa was not involved. Ndhlela also said their coalition partners must be willing to change the Constitution.

Croucamp said neither the DA nor the MPC would enter into a coalition with the EFF or MK.

“There are limits to which the DA can compromise themselves; the limit might reach the ANC but it does not reach the EFF and MK.”
