Dutch drug mule arrested at OR Tambo

A man is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court after police allegedly found more than 40kg of khat hidden in his luggage.

Police have arrested a Dutch national at OR Tambo International Airport after allegedly discovering more than 40kg of khat concealed in his luggage during an intelligence-driven operation this week, reports Kempton Express.

According to SAPS spokesperson Lt Col Amanda van Wyk, the suspect was intercepted while reportedly en route to Frankfurt, Germany.

“The South African Police Service has arrested another drug mule at the OR Tambo International Airport following an intelligence-driven operation conducted this week,” said Van Wyk.

Police seized khat with an estimated street value of R240 000 during the operation.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday (May 25) on charges related to drug trafficking.

Van Wyk said SAPS continues to intensify efforts to combat transnational organised crime and drug trafficking through intelligence-led operations at ports of entry across the country.

She added that over the past two years, SAPS has intercepted and arrested more than 50 drug mules at OR Tambo International Airport.
