Durban shooting death toll rises to 3

A shooting in Wentworth, believed to be related to gangs and drugs, claimed the life of a third victim.

A man who was attacked with three others in Hime Street in Wentworth on Wednesday died in hospital yesterday, raising the death toll to three. Nathaniel Thompson died after he sustained gunshot wounds.

This is the latest in a series of apparent gang-related shootings on Hime Street.

Southlands Sun reports that the four men (Ryan Hoys, Nathaniel Thompson, Darnel Driman and another unknown man) were seated outside a flat on Hime Street on Wednesday when an unknown vehicle stopped, and two men alighted and started firing shots at them.

Hoys died at the scene, while Thompson, Driman and the other man were rushed to hospital. Driman died shortly after he arrived.

The fourth man was reportedly discharged from hospital the same day.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza says three counts of murder and attempted murder are being investigated.

“The motive for the attack is under investigation. The police are following all possible leads;, no arrests have been made at this stage,” says Magwaza.

Metro police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu says the ongoing shootings in Wentworth were linked to gangs and drugs, although police have not ruled out other motives.

Gang-violence history

In November, Southlands Sun reported that two people were killed and seven others injured in a shooting that also took place in Hime Street, Wentworth. One of the deceased, Lyden Long, was 15. The other was 20-year-old Jayden Majority.

It was reported at the time that the incident was suspected to be gang-related.

In another incident that took place on Christmas Day, a 17-year-old was severely injured after being shot in Wentworth while walking on a public street. Southlands Sun reported that he managed to flee after sustaining gunshot wounds to the face and arm.
