Durban cop arrested for allegedly stealing hijack victim’s bank card

Police have clarified that an officer arrested for alleged bank card theft is not connected to the hijacking or murder of an 11-year-old girl.

A Durban police constable was arrested this morning at his Seaview home for allegedly stealing a bank card belonging to a hijack victim.

Last month, 11-year-old Zarah Ramsamy was killed when hijackers drove over her while she hid under her mother’s car during a hijacking in Malvern, Durban.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says the constable was arrested after he was found in possession of a bank card that belonged to the owner of the vehicle that was hijacked.

Netshiunda clarified that the officer is not connected to the hijacking or the girl’s murder.

“Although it is true that a police constable has been arrested, police wish to set the record straight that the officer is not linked to the hijacking nor the murder.

“At the time of the hijacking incident in the Malvern area, the arrested police constable was on duty in the Cato Manor policing precinct where he is stationed.

“When the hijacked vehicle was recovered in the Cato Manor area, the same constable was called upon to drive the vehicle to the Malvern. It was during that time that the constable got hold of the bank card and [allegedly] stole it,” explains Netshiunda.

He says the officer will be charged with theft and fraud for using the card and will appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Netshiunda says the officer will also face internal disciplinary process proportional to the crimes he has been charged with.
