Durban beaches re-open after shark safety nets restored

Beach lovers can now enjoy swimming in the ocean again as shark nets, that were damaged by heavy rain and debris, have been repaired.

Most of the Durban beaches that were closed after shark safety net gear was removed were re-opened on Wednesday.

The eThekwini Municipality today announced that 22 of the city’s beaches are open and safe for swimming. Only Warner Beach remains closed.

The closure of the beaches on October 19 came after logs and unsafe objects were found in the water (which was murky) following heavy rains.

All beaches were recently closed after the Natal Sharks Board advised the city to do so. The downpour caused shark nets at most beaches to break, making beaches unsafe for bathing, the municipality said.

To ensure the safety of residents and tourists, the municipality said it is constantly monitoring the water quality at all beaches.

It added that it has started a process of joint sampling of beach water quality with Adopt-a-River, a non-profit organisation that has its samples tested by independent laboratory Talbot.

This is to enable the credible comparison of test results in the interests of transparency and public safety, it said.

The city assured residents that their safety remains a priority.
