Drugs worth R4m seized from Limpopo lab

An ongoing crackdown aimed at dismantling drug networks in Limpopo resulted in the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of drugs worth millions.

A trio of men, aged 25 to 33, appeared in the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of possession and dealing in drugs.

The suspects were arrested in Makotse Village in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo, during an operation by the Limpopo Organised Crime Unit, the Limpopo Flying Squad, and the Lebowakgomo SAPS on Sunday.

Drugs worth around R4m were seized.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the operation formed part of an ongoing crackdown aimed at dismantling drug networks in the province.

“The police discovered a significant quantity of mandrax at the suspects’ residence and located a nearby drug manufacturing lab containing various chemicals and substances used in drug production.

“The SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory has been alerted to investigate the drug lab further. Security measures will remain in place at the site until the investigation is completed,” Ledwaba says.

Acting provincial police commissioner Major General Samuel Manala commended the collaborative efforts of the various law enforcement agencies involved in the operation.

The suspects are due to again appear in court on October 7, for a formal bail application, Ledwaba says.
