Daveyton deputy principal wounded in school shooting
A deputy principal from Dinoto Technical Secondary School was shot this morning in Daveyton and rushed to hospital.
The deputy principal of Dinoto Technical Secondary School in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, was reportedly shot this morning as he entered the school premises.
Benoni City Times reports that according to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), the deputy principal sustained injuries during the incident and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is receiving medical care.
Counselling and support provided
GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona confirms that psychosocial support teams, including officials from the Ekurhuleni North District, have been dispatched to the school to provide counselling and support to teachers, learners and staff who may have been traumatised by the incident.
“Despite this unfortunate event, the school has continued with the ongoing matric examinations under close monitoring to ensure minimal disruption and to maintain a safe environment for all learners,” Mabona says.
MEC condemns attack
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expresses shock at the incident and condemns the attack in the strongest terms.
“Schools are meant to be safe spaces for learners and educators. We wish the deputy principal a full and speedy recovery and we urge law enforcement authorities to ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.”
In October last year, Sipho Nhlengethwa, the deputy principal of Rivoni Secondary School, was fatally shot at the Chris Hani informal settlement in Daveyton while attending a meeting related to a case involving one of his colleagues.
The police have confirmed that a case of attempted murder has been opened and investigations are ongoing.
