Counterfeit US dollars worth R4.1m found during Durban raid

Six hijacked buildings were raided and two of the buildings' illegal water and electricity connections were disconnected.

The Durban CBD and Point have long been the city’s hub of criminal activities. To clamp down on crime, police and other law enforcement agencies raided six hijacked buildings earlier today. They found counterfeit US Dollars amounting to millions of Rands, drugs and liquor and arrested more than 100 suspected undocumented foreign nationals.

With some arrests made, the search for more suspects continues.

“At least 123 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested during an early integrated operation which also saw the recovery of counterfeit US Dollars equivalent to R4.1m at the Point and the Durban CBD,” said SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

The multidisciplinary operation included members of the police, metro police, correctional services, home affairs and other law enforcement agencies.

Of the buildings raided one is a municipal-owned building that was illegally occupied. A man, allegedly collecting money from residents living in the building, was taken in for questioning.

Netshiunda said a total of 117 rounds of ammunition of various calibres of firearms and a large amount of liquor were also recovered and seized.

“Two of the hijacked buildings were disconnected from water and electricity which were connected illegally. One suspect was also arrested after he was found in possession of cocaine and crystal meth as well as an undisclosed amount of money.

“The operation continues with police searching for suspects who are believed to have illegal firearms,” he concluded.
