Correctional services Covid-19 cases climb to 746

The department confirms another death of an official.

Another official has died after contracting Covid-19 as the Department of Correctional Services’ total number of Covid-19 cases climbed to 746 on Tuesday.

Departmental spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said a 58-year old official died in the Western Cape after contracting the virus.

“He was diabetic and this comorbidity strained recovery efforts. Our condolences to his family, friends and entire DCS brigade.”

This brings the total number of deaths related to Covid-19 in the department to six.

Nxumalo said 264 officials and 482 inmates have contracted the virus thus far.

Nxumalo said the Western Cape has the highest number of officials who have contracted the virus, standing at 164.

Of the new cases, the Western Cape recorded additional cases of eight officials and six inmates.

The total number of recoveries in DCS is now 173.

The total provincial breakdown was as follows:

– Eastern Cape: officials 77; inmates 413; recoveries 72

– Western Cape: officials 172; inmates 57; recoveries 89

– Limpopo: officials 2; recovery 1

– Gauteng: officials 7; inmates 12; recovery 10

– Northern Cape: official 2

– Free State: official 1

– KwaZulu-Natal: officials 2
