Child dies after wall collapse at school in Daveyton
What should have been a routine break at school turned into tragedy after a section of a wall collapsed on learners, leaving one dead and several injured in Ekurhuleni.
A Grade Three learner died, and five others were severely injured yesterday when a wall collapsed at Lerutle Primary School in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni.
According to Gauteng Department of Education’s (GDE) spokesperson Steve Mabona, a section of the wall on the school grounds collapsed on top of the learners during break time, reports Benoni City Times.
“Learners sustained severe injuries. Swift response from emergency personnel led to the children receiving medical attention on the scene before being transported to various medical facilities for further treatment.
“Tragically, a Grade Three learner later succumbed to his injuries.”
GDE Member of the Executive Council Matome Chiloane expresses his condolences.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the learner’s family, fellow learners, educators, and the entire school community as they mourn this devastating loss.”
“We will ensure the necessary support is provided, and the circumstances surrounding this incident are investigated.”
Psycho-social support teams were deployed to provide counselling and emotional support to affected learners, educators and bereaved families.
Last month, the Pietermaritzburg community was rocked by a similar tragedy when another child (12) died after a boundary wall collapsed.
