Canadian timber wolf on the loose in Benoni

A rescued wolf has escaped a facility after being spooked by fireworks on New Year's Eve.

Residents in and around the Benoni Agricultural Holdings have been advised to be on the lookout for a Canadian Timber wolf that escaped from a property in the area on New Year’s Eve.

According to Christo Myburgh of Absolute Exotics SA, the one-year-old male wolf escaped from their facility after being spooked by fireworks.

“We recently rescued the wolf from its previous owner after it suffered neglect and abuse. When it arrived at the facility, it was traumatised so I guess with all the fireworks on New Year’s Eve, it managed to jump out of the enclosure,” said Myburgh.

Following a search that lasted the whole day on January 1, the wolf has since been sighted at a farm around the Benoni Agricultural Holdings.

“We’ve got security there on the farm now monitoring its move.”

Myburgh added that if anyone spots the animal, they should not approach it but phone the Benoni SPCA or them.

He shared that it’s not deemed dangerous and is unlikely to pose a threat unless provoked.

To report sighting of the wolf contact Absolute Exotics SA on 076 6738540 or Benoni SPCA emergency number on 073 511 2261.
