Businessman killed in Alexandra robbery

Police believe a 60-year-old businessman shot dead in a robbery may have fought his attackers before being killed.

A 60-year-old businessman, who operated around Pan Africa Shopping Centre, was shot and killed on 2nd Avenue in Alexandra in the early hours of this morning, reports Alex News.

Police confirmed that the man was shot four times in what appears to be a robbery.

The suspects fled with his money.

Alexandera SAPS station commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane said the victim had left his home around 04:45 to buy stock for his business.

“He owns a small business at Pan, so he was going to buy stock with R1 200,” he said.

Five cartridges were found at the scene.

Ngubane revealed that evidence suggests there may have been a scuffle before the fatal shooting.

“At the crime scene, you can see that this old man was fighting,” Ngubane added.

He confirmed that the deceased sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

“The bullet wounds, one was in the chest, one in the back and two in the right hip,” he said.

Police are investigating a case of murder and at this stage it is not clear how many suspects were involved in the shooting.

No suspects or witnesses have been identified.

Ngubane said that while robberies in the early hours of the morning, where people are targeted going to work, have been recorded in Alexandra, this is the first time they have recorded a case of murder linked to such incidents.
