Police in Winterton, in central KZN, have opened an inquest after a burnt-out vehicle containing human remains was discovered along the Colenso road near the N3 on Saturday.

Northern Natal News reports that police responded to reports and found a car that had been extensively damaged by fire.

“Human remains were found in the driver’s seat.”

The deceased is believed to be a 75-year-old man, although formal identification is still pending.

Police are thoroughly investigating all possibilities regarding the incident.

More bodies in burnt-out cars

Three months ago, on November 5, a charred body was found in a burnt-out vehicle near the fence of a Krugersdorp school in the West Rand of Gauteng. The Krugersdorp News reported at the time that a gas bottle was found in the car, but that its role in the incident remained uncertain.

Ten days later, on November 15, four people were burnt to death inside two vehicles in Inanda, about 24km northwest of Durban.

The police said four counts of murder were being investigated. They reported at the time that three cattle carcasses were found next to one of the vehicles and that it was suspected the incident was related to stock theft.
