Brakpan North cop suspected of family shooting found dead
A police officer suspected of killing his wife and wounding four others, including two children, has been found dead.
Police have confirmed that the suspect in a shooting in Brakpan North on Monday evening, in which a woman was killed and four others were injured, was found dead in Mpumalanga yesterday.
Brakpan Herald reports that no foul play is suspected.
Gauteng provincial SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo stated preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was a police officer from Brakpan and that the deceased victim was the officer’s wife.
Masondo reported that police have opened a case of murder and four counts of attempted murder.
“Police received a complaint of a shooting incident in Brakpan at approximately 19:20 [on Monday]. On arrival at the scene, police found five victims with gunshot wounds,” he said.
“One of the victims was certified dead at the crime scene while the others were taken to the local medical care centre for treatment.”
The suspect was not present when officers arrived at the home along McMillan Avenue.
The Brakpan Herald understands that the other victims were the wife’s mother and a domestic worker, and two minor siblings, aged 15 and 13.
The condition of the surviving victims remains undisclosed.
