Bodyguards arrested in illegal blue-light use crackdown in KZN

Two municipal bodyguards and three motorists were arrested in a South Coast crackdown targeting illegal blue-light use and reckless festive season driving.

Two bodyguards from the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality in KZN were arrested on Tuesday for the illegal use of blue lights.

The Witness reports that KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma said the arrests formed part of the #NenzaniLaEzweni operation in Park Rynie on the South Coast of KZN.

Stopped without their principal

According to Duma, the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) stopped the pair while they were travelling alone, without the deputy mayor they were assigned to protect.

The deputy mayor was in a full council meeting at the time.

“The two bodyguards are facing charges of reckless driving, illegal use of blue lights, impersonating a police officer and carrying a firearm without a firearm license,” he said.

The blue lights were confiscated by the police.

The official BMW X5 they were travelling in was also impounded.

“We welcome the co-operation from the Ray Nkonyeni municipal manager, who has offered to ensure consequence management,” he said.

Speeding arrests also made

In addition, three other motorists were arrested for excessive speeding and reckless driving, including a doctor who clocked 181km/h in a Ford Ranger Raptor, an attorney who was travelling 175km/h in a VW Golf and a regional manager for a popular supermarket chain who was caught driving at 170km/h.

Duma added that during the festive period, the RTI will have no mercy.
