Bloemfontein teacher sentenced for not reporting child rape
A 44-year-old woman has been found guilty of failing to report a rape, allegedly committed by her teenage son, as required by law.
A Bloemfontein teacher has been sentenced for failing to report a statutory rape case involving a minor.
Bloemfontein Courant reports that according to Free State police spokesperson Mahlomola Kareli, the matter came to light during March 2022 when a rape case was registered at Navalsig Police Station.
“The 11-year-old victim alleged that she had been raped in an open field during December 2021 while visiting her paternal grandfather,” Kareli explains.
Investigations later revealed that the grandfather’s wife, a 44-year-old professional teacher, was aware that her 15-year-old son had allegedly raped the victim. “Rather than reporting the matter to the authorities or the victim’s parents, the accused took the child to a local pharmacy to purchase ‘morning-after’ pills to prevent pregnancy,” Kareli adds.
The accused was arrested on August 31, 2022. While the case against the 15-year-old son was subsequently withdrawn, authorities continued with the case against the mother for failing to report the incident as required by law.
The accused was found guilty and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, on condition she is not convicted of a similar offence during the period of suspension.
