Bloemfontein cops arrest man after murders of girlfriend and son

A 35-year-old woman and her one-year-old son were shot, allegedly by her partner who was later arrested along with his brother.

Police in Bloemfontein have arrested a suspect after he allegedly shot and killed his 35-year-old girlfriend and their 1-year-old son.

The incident took place at the girlfriend’s residence at around 07:00 on Sunday, where the couple allegedly got into an argument. At the time, the girlfriend’s mother was in another room of the residence.

“The girlfriend’s mother attempted to intervene, however, they continued fighting,” states police spokesperson Captain Loraine Earle. “She went to the neighbours for assistance and upon her return, she heard gunshots and rushed inside the house. She found her 35-year-old daughter and her one-year-old boy in a pool of blood. The suspect fled the scene.”

Police were called to the residence, with emergency personnel declaring the victims dead at the scene.

According to Earle, a search was launched by a police investigation team, which was led by the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit. “The 38-year-old suspect was traced and arrested in Botshabelo and the firearm was found in possession of the suspect’s brother, who was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm,” she said.

The suspect (38) and his brother (33) were expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court today. The court outcome was not known at the time of publishing.
