Bekkersdal tavern owner arrested after deadly shooting
Police say the Bekkersdal tavern owner, where a mass shooting claimed 10 lives, operated with a fraudulent liquor licence.
The owner of the tavern in Bekkersdal where several patrons were shot and killed on Sunday was arrested today, reports Randfontein Herald.
Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirms the arrest followed preliminary investigations, which revealed the owner had been operating the tavern using a fraudulent liquor licence.
“She will be charged with fraud and operating an unlicensed liquor outlet. She is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court in due course,” Masondo says.
The liquor at the premises was confiscated and the tavern was subsequently shut down.
Shooting leaves 10 dead
The incident occurred shortly before 01:00 at Tambo Section. Reports indicate that 12 suspects opened fire inside the tavern before continuing to shoot while fleeing the scene.
Nine people were killed and 10 others were injured and taken for medical treatment. One person died in hospital.

The Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Investigations Unit, with the Crime Detection Tracing Unit, launched a manhunt for the suspects, who were reportedly travelling in a white minibus and a silver sedan.
