Baby killed by axe-wielding man in Limpopo village

A baby was killed and two women were seriously injured after a man attacked them with an axe.

The Ritavi police in the Mopani district in Limpopo are looking for a man who is alleged to have brutally killed a 20-month-old boy and attempted to murder his wife and mother-in-law.

The murder is said to have taken place during a ceremony at a neighbour’s house in Lusaka village on Saturday night.

Preliminary information suggests the suspect arrived at the ceremony wielding an axe and allegedly attacked his mother-in-law (57), who had her grandson on her back.

The suspect then hit her twice in the back, with the axe, injuring the woman and the child, says police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.

He then allegedly attacked his wife (34), hacking her forehead with the axe, and fled the scene, he adds.

Police and emergency services were notified and the victims were transported to a local hospital where the baby died.

“The female victims were admitted with serious injuries.”

The police opened cases of murder, attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

“The motive behind the incident is unknown, but domestic violence cannot be ruled out,” says Ledwaba.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident.

“Situations like this leave us feeling very disappointed because we address gender-based violence and domestic violence issues daily. I’m pleading with couples to seek professional help when experiencing marital and relationship issues,” he says.

Anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts is urged to contact Warrant Officer Jonas Shikwambana on 082 319 9699 or crime stop on 08600 10111, or report the information at their nearest police station or via the MySAPS App.
