Attempted cash-in-transit heist in KaNyamazane: Suspects sought

Police thwarted a cash-in-transit robbery, but the suspects fled after they torched the vehicle they used to crash into the cash van.

Swift action by police resulted in an attempted cash-in-transit (CIT) heist being thwarted on Friday. The incident occurred on the Mngwenya road towards the N4 in KaNyamazane in Mpumalanga.

According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the CIT vehicle was travelling towards the N4 when a dark brown Mercedes-Benz hit it from behind and the driver of the van subsequently lost control of the vehicle.

“A group of armed suspects held the security officers at gunpoint before they placed explosive devices onto the security van. It seemed as if they intended to detonate these explosive devices, however, they soon realised that the police were on their way after being alerted about the incident,” Mdhluli says.

It is reported that the Mercedes-Benz used in this incident was torched by the suspects before they fled the scene.

“No money was reportedly taken by the suspects and no injuries were reported.”

Several law enforcement agencies within the SAPS, including the Hawks and the Explosives Unit, were at the scene where a case of an attempted CIT heist was opened for investigation.

No one has been arrested as yet.

The police urge anyone with information that might assist in apprehending the suspects to call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or send information via the MySAPS app.
