ATM bombed at bottle store in Springs

A witness alleges he followed the five men who bombed the ATM in Slovo Park, on foot, until shots were fired.

Five men bombed an ATM at a bottle store in Slovo Park, Springs, in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The bottle store owner notified the Springs SAPS when neighbours reported explosions coming from the store.

Local police spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala says a witness within close proximity reported he was woken up by an explosion, which was followed by two more.

“The witness alleged that as he approached the store, he noticed five suspects leaving the premises. He alleged that he followed them on foot, where, after shots were fired, he turned back,” says Tshabalala.

Tshabalala explains entry to the store was obtained by bombing the sliding gate, which was secured with a lock and chain.

“Thereafter, the palisade security gate and sliding door were bombed to gain access to the building. The dropsafe was also bombed to gain access to the money.”

Tshabalala adds the owner said she had topped up the ATM on Tuesday with R20 000.

Nothing else inside was taken, and the total damage and loss are estimated at R150 000.
