The farming community has strongly condemned a deadly home invasion on a sugarcane farm near Shakaskraal, in which a well-known farmer was killed and his elderly uncle seriously injured, reports The North Coast Courier.

The incident took place on January 30 at a farm in Riet Valley, where Aman Giyanshwar Roopsingh (52) lived with his family.

Roopsingh died last Tuesday and was laid to rest on Friday.

According to police, Roopsingh, his mother and his 77-year-old uncle were inside the house when they were confronted by an intruder wearing a balaclava.

Roopsingh and his uncle suffered multiple stab wounds. The uncle remains in hospital.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that Umhlali Saps has opened cases of house robbery and murder, and that an investigation is underway.

He said the robber fled the scene with two firearms and an airgun. The motive for the attack is unknown, and no arrests have been made.

The incident has drawn strong reaction from agricultural leaders, who described the attack as senseless and deeply distressing.

Gledhow Grower Council chairman Guy Heenan mourned the loss.

“I did not know Aman well, but he was a quiet, decent man,” said Heenan.

“He was well liked and well respected, and this has shaken the farming community,” he added.

SA Canegrowers chairman Higgins Mdluli also condemned the incident, describing it as tragic.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic attack on Aman Giyanshwar Roopsingh and his family,” said Mdluli.

“His family has deep roots in the cane-growing community, and he will be profoundly missed,” he added.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends and the wider community during this very difficult time. We also hope that the family member currently in hospital makes a full recovery. We condemn all acts of violence and stand united against such senseless attacks,” said Mdluli.

KZN premier Thamsanqa Ntuli said attacks in farming communities threaten both families and food security.

“Farm-related crimes will not be tolerated,” he said.

“This government remains firm in its commitment to protect rural communities, safeguard food production and uphold the rule of law,” added Ntuli.

The family declined to comment.
