7 armed attackers strike cash-in-transit team in Middelburg

Two guards were seriously injured when seven heavily armed attackers ambushed a cash-in-transit crew in Middelburg yesterday.

Two security guards were seriously injured during a cash-in-transit ambush at around 10:15 at a business in SADC Street in the Middelburg CBD yesterday morning.

According to Middelburg Observer, the security guards’ vehicle had just stopped inside the business premises when the attack unfolded, witnesses who asked to remain anonymous said.

A silver Mercedes Kompressor drove down the one-way street, then reversed and parked close to the entrance. At the same time, a white BMW stopped across the street. Armed attackers jumped out of both vehicles and ran towards the business.

The next moment, ‘all hell broke loose’.

Heavily armed suspects

Witnesses said the seven suspects involved were heavily armed. At least two of the attackers carried automatic rifles, while the remainder were armed with handguns. This confirms earlier reports that the assailants opened fire without warning on the cash-in-transit crew.

Middelburg Observer initially reported that one guard was shot in both legs and another in the arm. The suspects overpowered the guard collecting money inside the business, disarmed one of the officers, and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash in the Mercedes and BMW.

Injured guards taken to hospital

One of the injured guards was rushed to hospital in a private vehicle, while the second was transported by ambulance. Their conditions remain unknown.

Police locked down the affected part of SADC Street and forensic investigators were on the scene for hours, combing the area for evidence.
