6 alleged extortionists to appear in Gauteng court

Suspects linked to multiple extortion cases in Pretoria North and the North West were arrested yesterday.

Six suspects connected to a widespread extortion scheme are scheduled to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court today.

Their arrests followed a meticulous, intelligence-driven sting operation conducted by Tshwane police yesterday, targeting individuals accused of coercing local business owners and residents into paying monthly fees.

Local police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk reported that the suspects allegedly demanded R500 per month from their victims, using intimidation tactics and threatening business closures for non-payment. “These coercive practices have caused significant distress among community members, prompting law enforcement to take action after thorough investigations and intelligence gathering,” he stated.

The co-ordinated operation took place in Akasia and Soshanguve, where officers executed the arrests without incident.

Van Dyk noted the suspects are believed to be linked to multiple extortion cases reported in Soshanguve extensions, Block XX, and Kgabalatsane in the North West.

Major-General Samuel Thine, the Tshwane district commissioner, commended the police for their swift and effective response. “This operation underscores our commitment to combating crime and protecting our community.”

Residents are encouraged to report any incidents of extortion to law enforcement.
