5 people killed, 60 injured in Eastern Cape bus crash
Police in Stutterheim are investigating a case of culpable homicide and reckless driving after a fatal crash on the N6 left a car trapped under a bus.
Five people were killed and 60 injured when a bus and a car collided on the N6 between KuGompo, formerly East London, and Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape last night.
Makhaya Komisa, the spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Transport Department, says the bus was carrying 60 Zimbabwean nationals who were travelling towards Stutterheim when it collided with a VW Polo.
“The VW Polo, which had five occupants, became trapped underneath the bus. The jaws of life were used to extricate the deceased from the car,” he says.
“It is alleged that the bus and Polo were travelling in opposite directions at the time of the accident. The injured passengers were rushed to the nearest hospital for further medical evaluation,” says Komisa.
He says the crash’s cause will be investigated by various law enforcement agencies.
A case of culpable homicide and reckless driving was opened at Stutterheim Police Station.
Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery.
The MEC has urged motorists to obey the rules of the road.
