4 suspected robbers shot dead in Yeoville
A group of men believed to be linked to armed robberies targeting people travelling from OR Tambo International Airport were involved in a shoot-out with police.
Four suspected armed robbers were shot dead, and a fifth suspect was wounded and arrested in Yeoville yesterday, reports Rosebank Killarney Gazette.
Three unlicensed firearms and ammunition were recovered at the scene.
At about 05:30, police received intelligence about a group of suspects allegedly involved in a series of armed robberies targeting victims travelling from OR Tambo International Airport.
The information was analysed and operationalised by a joint team made up of SAPS Counter Intelligence, SAPS Gauteng Tactical Response Team, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations and Tracker Connect.
The men were travelling in a Suzuki Swift fitted with false registration plates.
According to Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, police attempted to intercept the vehicle in Yeoville, which led to a high-speed chase and a shootout between the suspects and law enforcement members.
The Serious and Violent Crimes Investigations unit will continue with the investigation and profiling of the suspects in conjunction with Crime Intelligence.
The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they have been used in other criminal activities.
