3 shot during cash-in-transit robbery outside an Ekurhuleni high school

Police have urged the public to come forward with information following the bombing of a cash van and the shooting of two security personnel and a bystander.

The Phomolong community in Ekurhuleni, including learners of Phomolong Secondary School, was left in shock after a shooting linked to a cash-in-transit heist earlier today.

Chaos erupted as the sound of gunfire rang out, disrupting the morning and leaving residents fearing for their safety.

By the time police arrived at the scene, the suspects had already fled, leaving behind a trail of devastation.

Authorities swiftly moved to secure the area, with the West Rand Explosive Unit on site to assess any potential threats before reopening the school to the public.

SAPS Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed to The Thembisan that an investigation is underway.

“The police are investigating an armed robbery that took place this morning in Phomolong.

“A cash van, en route to load an ATM, was ambushed by armed men who bombed the vehicle and shot two security personnel.

“The suspects were using a white Audi, a white Toyota Hilux, and a red Toyota Hilux as getaway vehicles.

“During the incident, a male resident was struck by a stray bullet and has been taken to the nearest hospital.”

The police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation.
